Cloud9 crash out as Worlds 2026 opens with a shock

Two days, two defeats, and Cloud9 are already out. The opening stretch of Worlds 2026 delivered its first major shock as FURIA ended the North American side’s campaign, while Karmine Corp moved one series away from the Swiss Stage.

The first two competition days, October 15–16 in Los Angeles, produced four best-of-five series and a sharp change in expectations. Cloud9 pushed KC to a fifth map on opening day. One day later, they became the first team eliminated. This recap covers those opening two days, with a separate update on the Demacia Cup final played on October 17.

Day 1: Karmine Corp survive Cloud9, MVK sweep FURIA

Cloud9 2–3 Karmine Corp. The opening series went the distance. C9 held a 2–1 lead and were one map from sending KC into the lower bracket, but the European side won the final two maps. For Cloud9, coming so close made the defeat particularly costly: their next series would be an elimination match.

MVK Esports 3–0 FURIA. MVK took the other opening series without dropping a map, earning an upper-bracket meeting with KC. FURIA’s defeat left them facing Cloud9 with no second chance remaining.

Day 2: KC take control of the upper bracket

Karmine Corp 3–0 MVK Esports. After their five-map opener, KC delivered a much cleaner scoreline in the upper-bracket final. The sweep secured their place in the Play-In qualifying match. It did not yet qualify them for Swiss: they still need to win the final series on October 18.

MVK remained alive, but their route now runs through the lower bracket. Only one of the four Play-In teams can advance to join the 15 teams already waiting in the main event.

FURIA turn the tables and send Cloud9 home

Cloud9 1–3 FURIA. C9 won the opening map, briefly suggesting that their close series against KC would translate into a recovery. FURIA answered with three consecutive wins, ending Cloud9’s tournament after just two series.

The contrast is what makes this the opening week’s biggest surprise. Cloud9 had been one map away from beating KC; FURIA had just been swept by MVK. Those results suggested an advantage for C9, but the elimination series overturned that reading completely.

There was a warning in the matchup’s history, however. FURIA had repeatedly beaten Cloud9 before Worlds. The Brazilian side extended that run when it mattered most, while C9 left their home-country World Championship in 19th place.

Karmine Corp have a major chance to reach their first Worlds main event

KC’s first Worlds appearance could now become their first trip to the main event. With two series wins already secured, they are just one best-of-five victory away from the Swiss Stage. Their 3–0 win over MVK and their upper-bracket position make this a major opportunity, although qualification is still far from automatic: whoever emerges from the lower bracket will have one final chance to stop them.

For the French organisation and its supporters, reaching Swiss would be the next milestone in an already historic Worlds debut. KC are already competing at Worlds through the Play-In; the remaining target is their first appearance among the 16 main-event teams.

What comes next in the Play-In?

FURIA and MVK meet again on October 17, this time with elimination on the line. The winner advances to face Karmine Corp on October 18 for the sole Swiss Stage berth. MVK won their first meeting 3–0, but FURIA’s response against Cloud9 gives the rematch a different backdrop.

Elsewhere, BNK FEARX defeated Team WE 3–1 on October 17 to win the Demacia Cup Global Invitational 2026. Team WE finished as runners-up, with the LCK side taking the trophy in China.

FEARX took the first two maps. WE kept the final alive by winning the third, but FEARX closed it out in map four. It gave the day a second decisive result: while Worlds teams fought to keep their campaigns alive, FEARX finished theirs with a title.
